The Governor of Punjab and Administrator UT Chandigarh, Shri V.P Singh Badnore, graciously flagged off the enthusiastic team comprising 41 students and 8 teachers on 27th Nov 2018 at 9:30 A.M. from his residence. Shri Badnore wished the team members individually and set the wheels in motion for this adventurous trip by sending off balloons in the air carrying with them a poster of the Cyclothon. He further infused the team with ebullience and verve by cycling a short distance with them.
The next three days saw this enterprising team travelling through several towns such as Nawanshahr, Beas, Jalandhar etc, spreading their message of non-violence, secularism and innate patriotism. The students also aimed to spread the message of peace, environment conservation by highlighting the harm caused by stubble burning and the importance of wearing helmets for road safety during the three-day event.
A solemn Wreath Laying Ceremony at Martyrs Memorial, Jallianwala Bagh, Amritsar on 29th November 2018 marked the successful culmination of the Bhavan Vidyalaya Cyclothon. The participants were given a rousing welcome with garlands on arrival at Jallianwala Bagh by Chairman Shri. R.K. Saboo, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Chandigarh Kendra, Sr. Principal, Mrs. Vineeta Arora, Vice-Principal Mrs. Suparna Bansal and Principal Junior Wing Mrs, Soma Mukhopadhyay. Mr. Avinash Mahindru, Chairman and Dr. Anita Bhalla, Principal, Bhavans S.L Public School, Amritsar were also present on the occasion and attended the ceremony.
Shri R. K Saboo, in his address commended the participating students and teachers for their resilience and die hard spirit that enables them to successfully complete the daunting initiative of cycling their way from Chandigarh to Amritsar. He also informed them about the historical relevance of the place. The enthusiastic students also shared their experiences and said that the Cyclothon served twofold objectives of spreading awareness regarding social and environmental issues besides commemorating 100 years of the massacre.
